According to the BBC, the amendment, supported Saturday by over two-thirds of the local lawmakers, now is expected to go to a nation-wide referendum in February.
“It’s the feeling of the people, even of Congress; I understand perfectly. I’m not trying to stay in power forever. I also want to tell you, some have said, ‘Evo forever,'” Morales commented on the parliament’s decision on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York as quoted by the media.
Morales was first elected president of the South American nation in December 2005 by an absolute majority, and re-elected for two more terms in 2009 and again in 2014.
