Abkhazia seeks to expand international recognition

Abkhazia seeks to expand international recognition of the republic and take part in integration processes initiated by Russia on the post-Soviet space, Abkhazian President Raul Khadzhimba said on Monday.

“Our relations are reaching a new qualitative level, which envisions close cooperation in ensuring regional security and stability. Russia proves again its commitment to equal cooperation with Abkhazia,” he said after talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Allied relations with Russia will give security guarantees to Abkhazia and broad possibilities for the social and economic development, Khadzhimba said. “We are a small country. Over many years, we’ve consistently looked up to Russia by ensuring our common interests,” he said, adding that Russia had recognized the independence of Abkhazia and supported it on the international arena.

Khadzhimba thanked his Russian counterpart for the support to the Abkhazian people and for signing the Treaty on Allied Relations and Strategic Partnership. “We seek to step up and expand international recognition of our state and take part in integration processes on the post-Soviet space that Russia initiates. We are sure that the Treaty will give a new impetus to this process,” he said.

The Abkhazian people made the historical choice long ago in favor of equal cooperation and union with Russia. “This corresponds to our long-term, strategic interests and provides a reliable foundation for further strengthening of sovereignty and security of the Republic of Abkhazia,” Khadzhimba said.
